The dumplings (pol. pierogi) is the dish which is popular mostly in Western Europe (mainly Russia, Lithuania, Poland but) and Asia (China and Japan). Pierogi are made from thin dough which is stuck on the edges and filled inside. Shaped in the half circle shape is then cooked or sometimes deep-fried. Pierogi filling could be various: meat, chees, vegetables all all this mixed together. For example in the vicinity of Lublin, very popular is to put into pierogi crushed potatoes, mint and white cheese - such dish is very refreshing.

History of pierogi isn't known. Probably the dish was invented in China and wondered through the Asia to the Europe. It is also believed, that Marco Polo bring them to the Italy, where they evolved to local ravioli.
In Poland pierogi are known since XIII. They were brought from Rus by one of the Polish bishop, which was visiting Kijów.
Initially pierogi were made only for the special occasions like religious or state holidays. Every holiday had own sort of pierogi's fillings ie. pierogi on weddings had inside chicken meat (dish called kurniki)
