Jewish cemetary in Łódź i very characteristic place, definitely worth to see. Cemetary was created in 1892 and has almost 42 ha (over 230 tys buried people). It isn't the biggest one and the oldest, but when You visit it, You can see how Jews burry their dead.

Most popular tombstone is macewa. It is typical and very common type of Jewish grave. It has shape of rectangle and usual is made from stone or wood (after XIX also from iron). What is characteristic, rectangular shape has rounded top. On the front there is relief and epitafium.


On Jewish cemetary You can also find hudge mausoleums. The biggest one belongs to Izrael Poznański - rich manufacturer called Cotton King (one of the tree) living in 1833-1900. He builded monumental grave contrary to the Jewish burial rules. The tomb is made from granite and marmum and is place on the circle (almost 10 meters in diameter) plane.


What is characteristic for Jewish cemeteries, many graves are unkempt and neglected and decaying.
