Today another Polish belief from the past. "Błędne ognie" (lat. ignis fatus)- which could be translated as vicious fires, wisp, or walking fires - they are blue, green small flames of mud gases which floats over the marshlands. Such fires are known in many places in the world and have many names and explanations.

According to Polish folk's beliefs this were souls of unbaptized children or repentant souls. They were very dangerous because they lure walking man and trapped him in the swamp! People believed that only way to avoid vicious fires was a prayer or offering in a church.
There were also good "walking fires", which could show to the wonderer proper way home.
