In 7-8 september the 1939 during the inital phase of war the great battle beetween Polish and German troops took place - battle of Wizna. In this battle, German forces were some 60 times stronger than the Polish defenders!

The area of the Wizna village was prepared as a fortified line of defence before war. It was the 9 kilometres long line of Polish defences subordinated to the Polish Narew Corps shielding Łomża and providing defence of northern approach to Warsaw.

When war begins not all bunkers were ready, prepared and equiped with ammo, but Polish defences were well constructed and placed. The bunkers with walls 1,5 meter thick were placed on hills with good visibility.
Few days before battle, on September 2, Captain Władysław Raginis was named the commander of the Wizna area. His forces numbered approximately 700 soldiers and 20 officers armed with 6 pieces of artillery (76mm), 24 HMGs, 18 machine guns and two Kb ppanc wz.35 anti-tank carbines.
The battle started on 9 september but before this German artillery and planes from Luftwaffe bombarder Polish bunkers for whole day and night. German's 10th Panzer Division. Polish troops fought for almoust two days with havy outnumbered enemies. On second day with no ammo, with almost every bunker destroyed, Polish commander gen. Raggis decided to surrender, becouse Germans threatened Raggis that they would kill every wounded and prisoners of war. He let go rest of his troops and committed honorable suicide by throwing himself on a grenade destroing the last bunker.
