Św Lipka cult started in in XIV century. It is believed, that one of prisioners from Kętrzyn's castle, through the reveltalion of the Virgin Mary, carved her statue in wood. After this act, he was released and he hanged statue on the lindeen tree. Near this tree the small chapel was then built. Through the past, chapel was rebuilt to current form.

Current Św Lipka sanctuary was built in 1688-1963. What is interesting, builders inserted over 10 000 wooden piles into the ground to stabilize the substrate. On the church facade there are placed sculptures made by the Christopher Perwangera. The church is richly decorated with, among others, paintings on the ceiling from the years 1722-1727 made by John Matthias Meyer. Inside the chapel there are also paintings (made by well known Marcin Altomonte and Piotr Kolberg) with most known "Holy Mary Lady of Sorrow" and famous organs with 40 voices and moving statues.
