History of the city is rich. Current city lands were on Polanie's territory (one of the Polish tribe before Poland) and through the times a lot of Polish landlords posesed this area. In 1276 Teutonic Knights got the land from Polish lord Sambor (which he took from Cysters Order) and they created here an outpost and later built the castle and the city. Gniew wondered from Teutonic's to Polish hands during war between Poland and Knights.

What is interesting, near Gniew in 1626 Polish special units - Husaria were defeated by the Sweeden. It was second defeat of Husaria ever in history.
